DTG and DTF Printing

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing and direct-to-film (DTF) printing are popular printing methods
for custom apparel and accessories. Comparing those textile printing techniques,
it’s important to consider fabric limitations, print quality, and print durability.

What is DTG Printing?

DTG technology involves directly applying ink onto the fabric using a specialized printer. The water-based inks penetrate the fabric, allowing for high-quality and durable prints. For light-colored materials, the process is straightforward – the printer applies the design directly onto the surface of the bag. For darker materials, a white underbase is required to make the colors visible and vibrant.
The DTG process requires proper fabric preparation – the cotton bag must be clean, dry, and properly stretched on the printer’s platform. After printing, the ink is cured using a heat press to ensure durability.

What Are The Benefits DTG Printing?

The biggest advantage of DTG printing is the ability to print in full color, offering unlimited possibilities for design. Additionally, due to the use of special inks, the prints are resistant to wear and fading, ensuring they remain durable and aesthetically pleasing for a long time. Another benefit is the speed of production, which is important for larger orders. DTG printing is also eco-friendly, as it does not require the use of harmful chemicals.

Exceptional Print Quality: Produces bright, intricate designs with seamless color transitions, ideal for a variety of fabric uses. No Initial Costs: Involves minimal setup, making it a budget-friendly choice for small orders or individual items. Eco-Friendly: Utilizes water-based inks and is energy-efficient, offering a sustainable printing solution. Rapid Production: DTG printing is quite speedy, allowing for quick fulfillment of orders, which is perfect for on-demand and urgent projects. For instance, small orders can be completed in about two days.
Disadvantages of DTGarrow-down
Material constraints: DTG is most effective on light-colored fabrics that are 100% cotton. When printing on dark bags, a white underbase is necessary, which can lead to higher costs and longer production times. Reduced durability on thicker fabrics: For bags made from thicker materials, such as heavy cotton, the print may not hold up as well since the ink has difficulty penetrating deeply into the fabric. Higher costs for large quantities: When it comes to larger orders, DTG can be pricier compared to alternatives like DTF or screen printing. The cost per unit doesn’t significantly drop with increased quantities. Time-intensive for bulk production: Each bag needs to be printed one at a time, which can make fulfilling large orders a lengthy process.
When choose DTG?arrow-down
Choose DTG if: You prioritize the highest print quality, detailed designs, and soft finishes. You are printing on light-colored, 100% cotton bags. You need small batches or individual pieces. Eco-friendliness is a priority.

DTG vs. DTF for cotton bags

When deciding between DTG (Direct-to-Garment) and DTF (Direct-to-Film) for printing on cotton bags, it’s important to consider your specific needs.
DTG offers exceptional print quality with detailed gradients and a soft, almost unnoticeable feel, making it perfect for light-colored cotton bags and eco-conscious projects. However, it’s more suitable for smaller orders due to higher costs for bulk production.
On the other hand, DTF shines in versatility and durability. It works well on a variety of materials, including dark and mixed fabrics, and delivers vibrant colors with a slightly thicker texture. It’s also more cost-effective and efficient for large orders, though it’s less eco-friendly due to the use of film and adhesives.
If you are looking for intricate designs and prioritize sustainability, DTG is your go-to. For bulk production or projects requiring durability across diverse materials, DTF is the better choice.

What is DTF Printing?

In the DTF process, the design is not printed directly onto the fabric but first onto a special film. The print on the film is coated with adhesive powder, which acts as a bonding agent. The film is then heated to activate the adhesive and transferred onto the bag using a heat press. The adhesive binds the print to the material, ensuring durability and resistance to washing.
The DTF process is more versatile than DTG because it can be used on various materials (not just cotton, but also polyester, fabric blends, etc.) and on both dark and light-colored surfaces.

What Are The Benefits DTF Printing?

DTF printing is highly versatile, suitable for various surfaces like cotton and polyester, and works well on both light and dark materials, making it more flexible than DTG printing. DTF prints are durable, resisting washing and wear, ideal for frequently used items like shopping bags. The vibrant colors, enhanced by a white underbase, remain striking on dark fabrics.
The user-friendly process allows for quick heat press application, streamlining large orders and reducing costs for bulk purchases.

Flexibility: DTF can be applied to nearly any material, including cotton, polyester, and various fabric blends. It’s suitable for both light and dark bags, offering greater flexibility compared to DTG. Longevity: DTF prints are exceptionally durable, standing up well to washing, abrasion, and daily wear and tear. This makes it perfect for items that will be used frequently, like shopping bags. Brilliant colors: With a white underbase on the film, DTF produces colors that are bright and striking, even on darker fabrics. Simple application: Using a heat press for the transfer process is quick and straightforward, making it easy to handle large production runs efficiently. Cost savings for bulk orders: As the quantity of DTF printing increases, the cost per unit decreases, making it a budget-friendly option for large-scale production.
Disadvantages of DTFarrow-down
Thicker print feel:Unlike DTG, DTF prints are more noticeable to the touch. This might be less desirable for certain designs or customer preferences. Eco-friendliness: The use of film and adhesive makes the DTF method less environmentally friendly compared to DTG. Additional equipment required: To transfer the print onto the bag, a heat press is necessary, which can add to the costs for small businesses or individuals printing at home.
When choose DTF?arrow-down
Choose DTF if: You’re printing on dark bags or materials with mixed compositions. You need durable prints with vibrant colors. You’re planning larger orders where cost per unit matters. You don’t mind a thicker, more noticeable print.
