Rebranding with Soul – An Ecological Approach to Design: Cotton Bags for the Adam Mickiewicz Institute

An Institute Full of Romanticism

The cycle focusing on the history of cotton bags usually revolves around the promotional goals of our clients. We aim to understand the ideas behind specific designs and graphics. This time, however, we want to delve deeper and broaden the story of the bag by exploring the history of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute – as this project is closely tied to its headquarters, whose history is truly remarkable.

The building, a grand manor house, is one of the few structures that survived both world wars intact.

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute was established to promote and highlight Poland's cultural significance on the international stage. Its patron, fittingly, is the pioneer of the Romantic era in Poland – a movement that emphasized change and the impact of culture on the broader perception of the world, embracing emotions and a certain idealization of art.

A Sweet History

It all began in the 19th century when the Warsaw we know today, along with its streets, was just beginning to take shape. During this time, a plot of land was designated where the building at No. 25 now stands, located between Marszałkowska and Mokotowska streets.

Over time, through numerous transformations and changes, the building fell into disrepair. It was subsequently leased to Bohdan Broniewski, who revitalized and expanded the property. He transformed it not only into a family estate but also into the headquarters of the Lublin Sugar Refineries Association.

Today, the Palace of the Sugar Manufacturers in Warsaw houses the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, established in 2000 as the Center for International Cultural Cooperation.

The Building's Interiors Played a Key Role in Selecting the Design Used in the Project

- The design directly reflects the flooring found on the first floor of the main hall in the building.

- The flooring, like the columns, stucco frames, and wooden balustrades, is one of the oldest preserved architectural elements of the structure.

According to the information obtained, the creator of the designs is Dr. Izabela Jurczyk, the leading graphic designer at Studio Design and simultaneously a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Studio Design collaborates with many cultural institutions, including the National Centre for Culture (NCK) and the Łódź Philharmonic. She is also the author of the new branding for the Museum of Łódź, which was likewise based on the architectural and decorative elements of the museum's headquarters.

The new branding in an ecological style

The Institute's authorities decided to use a fantastic ecological advertising medium: our cotton products. Their versatility and timeless design make them an exceptionally appealing marketing tool.

IAM chose a denim fabric that worked beautifully in combination with the elegance and craftsmanship of the selected graphic design. The look is completed with a high-quality external denim label, whose red color ties into the central theme. The Institute's rebranding can be admired not only on the cotton bag but also in the design of table runners and cushion covers.

A perfect blend of eco-friendly materials and timeless design.
